Topic selected and reason behind it:
In selecting the potential topic I was looking back at my academics with ACCA and I felt that the one area I would be most comfortable with, would be Topic no.8 which is “The business and financial performance of an organization over a three year period”. I have noticed one thing that all of the ACCA papers I have cleared, I have repeatedly come across financial statements and I had to go behind the numbers in order to understand what they say about an organization’s performance. When it came to the particular organization, I had to choose one of the biggest retailers Tesco Plc. over the three years from year 2009 to 2011 and has compared with Sainsbury Plc. performance for the same time as I was always wondering how a company could become such big which started selling surplus groceries from a store in East End of London and how could it occupies huge market share while there are so many strong competitors still exists.

Reasons for choosing the Organisation
The reason why I have chosen Tesco Plc. for analysing the business and financial performance are as follows: The main reasons why I have choosing Tesco Plc. is, its aggressive growth strategy. Tesco group were made two significant acquisitions in fiscal year ending 2009 in intense and adverse economic development. However the following issues have been considered influential for me to work on Tesco and to find out the reason behind its strong economic growth: * Tesco Plc. has been the market leader in UK grocery market for many years by keeping a faster growth pace than it competitor for a decade and has widened the difference with its nearest competitors ASDA. Tesco still holds over 30% market shares. * Recent economic slowdown in UK had many effects on grocery sector. As a result Customers becoming more sensitive to price, competition is getting stiff. In last decade Tesco has shown its competence, however when economy slows down, how can Tesco still keep its position? * Easy to gather information required.
