Rhetorical Analysis
Homelessness has become an epidemic across our nation. Homelessness does not constitute of one gender, class, or nationality, it can happen to anyone. Although people become homeless resulting from dozens of different conditions, they all find themselves in the same situation; no money and nowhere to go. This can sometimes force people to camp on private land or hide on city property (Levitz). Often, one fifth of homeless children are taken from their families due to the extreme conditions they are required to live in (MacKinnon). Frequently authors, artists, motivational speakers, and legislators take to the media to generate awareness of homelessness. These publications are often seen, but not always heard and understood. Watching the “Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless Ad” and reading “Cities Tolerate Camps,” it was very easy to determine that the “Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless Ad” had a much more effective use of rhetoric than “Cities Tolerate Homeless Camps.”

Taking a look at “Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless Ad,” everything about it makes the audience feel for these millions of destitute people. The sense of Pathos is almost overwhelming throughout the short one minute and sixteen seconds. The first minute of the ad causes the audience to sense a morose ambiance upon the topic of homelessness. The first three words; “Imagine if you” puts the viewer into the shoes of a person who has nothing (MacKinnon). The music played is slow and gloomy (MacKinnon). The mention of children and the realization that these are innocent, helpless human beings brings the audience to an almost instant understanding that these are people who are not to be looked down upon, but require help (MacKinnon). At one minute and one second, the music turns joyful and the words being displayed show the audience that they can help and can “make a change in a family’s life” (MacKinnon).
